Breaking the Cycles That Hold You Back

“Therefore if the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
John 8:36 (KJV)

There are certain patterns you get so used to fighting that you start believing they’ll always be a part of your life. Cycles that feel glued to your story. Habits that feel impossible to break. Mindsets that cling to you even when you try to walk away. When you’ve spent years circling the same struggles, it’s hard to imagine freedom — but breaking the cycles that hold you back is exactly the kind of healing God specializes in.

I’ve lived this truth.
There were seasons when I kept repeating the same emotional loops — craving validation from people who weren’t good for me, choosing connections out of loneliness, settling because I didn’t believe better was possible. I didn’t go back because I wanted pain — I went back because the broken version of me felt unworthy of anything healthier.

And even when I knew certain situations weren’t from God, part of me feared letting them go because the cycle felt familiar. Predictable. “Safer” than trusting God for more.aw

But God didn’t leave me there.

He stood with me and held my hand as He:
Confronted my patterns with truth.
Exposed the lies that kept drawing me back.
Pulled me out of rooms I didn’t have the strength to exit on my own.

His mercy broke cycles I thought were permanent.

Cycles Don’t Come From Nowhere — They Come From Old Wounds

Long before the cycle shows up in your adult choices, it starts in the deeper places:

  • A childhood lie that told you you’re not enough
  • A wound that taught you to accept crumbs
  • A moment of rejection that formed your self-worth
  • A lonely season that made you settle for anything
  • A heartbreak that convinced you you’re hard to love

Cycles often grow out of moments where you lacked support, truth, or safety.

That’s why they’re hard to break — they’re tied to the oldest parts of you.

But God knows exactly where the pattern began.
And He knows how to untangle every root.

Your Story Is Proof

As God started healing me, I noticed something: what I thought was “just a way of life” was actually pain.
Pain made me choose the wrong people, caused me to ignore red flags, and made me stay in toxic situations longer than I should have.
Pain made me fear saying no.
Pain made me confuse attention with love.

And once God began healing that pain, the cycle started losing its grip.

You might not realize it right now, but every time you pray, every time you walk away from something familiar but unhealthy, every time you say “Lord, help me,” the cycle is breaking — even if it’s slow.

Freedom doesn’t always arrive in one moment.
Sometimes it comes through a thousand surrendered steps.

But it comes.

Your Turn: God Wants to Break Your Cycles Too

Even if the pattern feels bigger than your willpower, it is not stronger than God’s power.

God can break the cycles of:
  • choosing the wrong relationships
  • returning to what hurts
  • self-doubt
  • emotional numbness
  • overeating, undersleeping, shutting down, or giving up
  • settling for less
  • fear and shame

I know He can because I struggled with every one of the cycles I mentioned. I used to think there was no hope for me and that things would never change. Maybe you feel that way in this moment. But let me cover you in God’s truth.

You are not bound forever.
Sister, you are not stuck.
You are not a prisoner to your history.

If God can break it for me, He can break it for you too.

Are you willing and ready to surrender to Jesus? Give Him the cycles that hurt you, hold you back, cause you to sin, and weaken your faith.

Stand firm in your faith, trust God, and claim your freedom in Christ. Who the son sets free is free indeed.

You are free! This time, the cycle ends. Walk in your victory!

Prayer

Dear Lord, reveal every cycle in my life that doesn’t honor You. Show me what needs healing, what needs surrender, and what needs to be let go. Break the patterns that have followed me for years, and give me the strength to walk in freedom. Heal the wounds that created these habits, and replace every lie with Your truth. I will stand and proclaim that I am no longer bound by sin. You have set me free! Thank You Jesus! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Walk in your freedom, friend. God is breaking the cycles that hold you back. Hold on and trust in Him.
